Co-Signing on the Gaza War

The latest chain of events was dismally predictable: Hamas, pushed by Iran and its own extremist ideology, refused to extend a six-month cease-fire that expired last December 19, and resumed firing rockets. Israeli leaders, pushed by election politics and an angry public, responded with a furious assault on Gaza. The Israelis may have wanted to take their shot at Hamas while a supportive President George W. Bush was still in office.”

 I agree…

“The longer the Israeli incursion, the more casualties mount (550 Palestinians and 5 Israelis have died so far); the more Hamas’s popularity grows among its supporters; the more moderate Arab states, which have correctly blamed Hamas for ending a six-month cease-fire, are alienated; and the more regional instability is fueled.”

“Israel’s decision to pour ground troops and armour into the Gaza Strip is a dangerous gamble. If the goal is to reduce the number of rockets Hamas can fire at neighbouring, southern Israeli towns, it is probably achievable – for now. But if Israel proposes to cut the heart out of its most implacable Palestinian opponents, it will fall”

“Much as we may deplore Hamas’ rockets into Israel, Israel’s response has been totally out of proportion. Its air strikes, unavoidable killing of hundreds of Palestinians, is morally indefensible and its ground offensive is strategically self-defeating. Killing 100 Palestinians several years ago did not defeat Hamas, and the current “all-out war” only makes Hamas more popular. As Gandhi said, “An eye for an eye makes the world blind.”

                                                                    -Cambridge Chronicle

 I agree…

“If you’re going to deny the Palestinians weapons to defend themselves, then you must stop all military and economic aid to Israel.”

-Retired US Army Gen. James J. David

 I agree…

“If someone was sending rockets on my house where my daughters were sleeping at night, I would do everything to stop it, and I would expect Israelis to do the same thing.”

                                                                            -Barack Obama

I agree…

“In Gaza, mankind’s basic morality is at stake. The suffering and wanton destruction of people’s lives, the despair and absence of human dignity in this region have gone on for too long. The Palestinians of Gaza – indeed, all those across the region who lead blighted lives without hope – cannot wait for new administrations or international institutions to act. If the Fertile Crescent is not to become a futile crescent, we must wake up and find the moral courage and political vision for a quantum leap in Palestine.”                             -Desmond Tutu
